ABOUT HARMONICAS...
CHROMATIC
The chromatic harmonica has a slide button in the mouthpiece which allows you to switch notes to the sharps and flats. This gives you a full chromatic scale - like having all the notes on a piano. They come in 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16-hole versions, ranging from two to four octaves. The 12-hole models come in different keys and are the most popular models played. The reeds also have wind-savers (or valves) which makes the instrument airtight.
DIATONIC
The standard diatonic harmonica is a 10-hole instrument with blow and draw notes. The notes can be bent up and down in pitch to add to the range of the instrument. These harmonicas are made in all 12 keys as well as many variations such as minor, country tuned, low and high octave versions.
TREMOLO
Tremolo harmonicas have two rows of holes so that two reeds can be played simultaneously. The notes are tuned slightly apart to create a tremolo sound, or 'beating' note. Blow and draw notes are often in seperate reed chambers. Combs can be plastic or wood, straight or curved.
Octave-tuned harmonicas are similar in design, but the two rows of reeds are tuned an octave apart. Some models are double-sided, which gives you two harmonicas in one. 'The Krauzwender' is set on a wheel with six keys in one instrument which can be spun around to change keys.
ABOUT ACCORDIONS...
DIATONIC
The Diatonic Button Accordion has two different notes on each button - one for the pull and one for the push. Models range from one to three rows on the treble side and from 2-24 bass buttons on the left hand. In recent years the diatonic accordion has undergone a resurgence of popularity and innovation. It's main advantage is the sweet harmony and tunings of the chords, which cannot be surpassed, even by its big chromatic brothers. The reeds also have wind-savers (or valves), like a chromatic harmonica, which makes the instrument airtight and louder. Many variations and tunings are available for different levels and musical styles of music.
PIANO CHROMATIC
The Piano Accordion is the classic favourite that most people identify with these family of reed instruments. The right hand treble side comes in a piano keyboard layout. The left-hand bass side features bass buttons, which allows for chords of many varieties, depending on the size and features of the instrument. Piano accordions are usually described by how many bass buttons they have. They also come with sets of reeds (or voices) that can play in combinations for different tonal colours and tremolo effects. When air is pushed through the bellows, the reed vibrate to make musical tones.
BUTTON CHROMATIC
The Chromatic Button Accordion has buttons on both sides of the instrument. The efficient layout of notes allows a wider octave range of notes to be used in the instrument, and thus is favoured by professional players. Jazz, Classical and Eastern European musicians often play these instruments because of their design and quality. A full size chromatic accordion can have up to 10,000 parts inside.
